Our wonderful nursery propagation intern, Bella, writes here regularly, explaining what work and research she is undertaking as part of her internship. Today she's explaining how they prepare a new area.
"We’re getting ready to plant in a brand-new area, which means… more plants are on the way!
But before we dig in, we need to make sure the soil is healthy, in particular that it’s not too salty.

To do this, we compare the soil’s electrical conductivity to that of water. Why? Because high electrical conductivity usually means a high salt level, which can harm plant growth.
Luckily, the test results showed everything was within a normal range."
