Bella, our new nursery-propagation intern has embraced every opportunity to learn more about the Gardens and its plants. Here she writes about a recent event. "I joined the launch event at the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens (JBG) for a new book: “Water-Wise Plants for the Mountain Region in the Face of Climate Change.”
This important initiative by the JBG, supported by KKL and the Volcani Institute, brings attention to lesser-known native plants that are both beautiful and resilient. These plants are perfect for ornamental gardening—and growing them also helps preserve species that are increasingly endangered.
After the talk, we went on a guided tour where we could see the plants that Scientific Director, Ori Fragman-Sapir talked about in his lecture.
We also went outside the Gardens to walk the path that visitors coming from the city pass through. It showcases an inspiring model of sustainable, low-water gardening.
The water=wise garden section was designed using a matrix planting method.
It is watered only once a month—and not at all in the winter! Once established, the plants require minimal maintenance, with little irrigation or weeding. They were planted in a way that ensures there is always seasonal bloom, all year round.
A beautiful and practical example of how we can garden in harmony with nature, even in times of climate change.
